PAST SUCCESSES

Buoyed by the success and enthusiasm of EXPO 86, the Society launched plans for its first event, a festive exhibition on the theme of Unbuilt Vancouver. This festival celebrating art, architecture and urban living was held in a vacant city building on West Georgia Street for 3 weeks in October 1987. It brought together architecture and public art displays as well as performing arts and a series of lectures and forums on design and urban affairs.

In addition to Unbuilt Vancouver there were exhibits on Lost Vancouver, the future of Vancouver, model city buildings constructed by children, a display by landscape architects on open spaces, and a model of the city as built. It attracted over 12,000 visitors and was carried out on a total budget of $450,000 which the Society raised from corporate donations and augumented with grants from the Canada Council and Federal and Municipal Governments.
